Are you really falling off the wagon?
Well, first of all, let’s address this phrase ‘Falling off the wagon’ or ‘ getting back on the wagon’. Can someone people tell me where this magical wagon is? The one where all I have to do is not fall off in order to get what I want? Pardon my french, but what the hell? If all I had to do was not fall off a damn wagon I’d look like Beyonce right now and have the patience of Mother Theresa.
No. I say we don’t RIDE the wagon. I say we’re PULLING the stupid thing. Which is why it’s SO FREAKIN’ HARD. So no, I did not ‘fall off the wagon’… I let it go. Maybe it stopped right where it dropped it, or maybe it rolled away. But either way, it’s not with me right now, and I have to go find it, grab it, and start pulling again if I am going to get what I want. You guys, change is hard. There is no magical ride to change, it takes hard work… just like pulling a wagon full of whatever baggage it is you’re lugging around.
You’re not ‘falling off’ your wagon, you’re letting it go. You don’t ‘get back on’ you start pulling it again. At least according to me, and clearly I am the smartest person alive. I also tried to put salt in my coffee this morning, so… you be the judge.
No one can pull a wagon all the time
I hate this part about change and working to get what I really want. But it’s true, we cannot pull our wagons all day every day. We have to let them go from time to time and regroup. Like Oregon Trail back in 4th grade, we need to take breaks so we don’t get dysentery and die. Well maybe not that extreme, but you get the gist.
We, or at least I, tend to beat ourselves up whenever we aren’t pulling our wagon full speed ahead. STAHP IT! You are going to have to let it go and get a drink of water sometimes. And hey, maybe it rolls away while you’re drinking your
margarita water. It happens. And yeah, it sucks. But that’s life. Afterall, wagon’s have wheels and no breaks. When this happens you have a choice: say screw the wagon and give up, or go find the wagon and start pulling again. This choice does not need to be made immediately.
When we’re pulling a wagon it is typically because we are trying to change or improve something about ourselves. Sometimes it’s ok to abandon that particular wagon and move on. We don’t always need a wagon to pull. And when we’re pulling one, we’ll need breaks.

Other people’s wagons have nothing to do with yours
If you’ve been around this blog a while you might know that I have a penchant for metaphors. In my opinion, comparing our wagons (chosen areas of self-improvement) is useless. Just like comparing our crap. Sometimes we see Glenda rocketing along pulling her wagon titled “lose 20 lbs” She hauls that thing at lightning speed and throws it across the finish line like The Hulk. Good for her! But what we might not have seen is the wagons she let go off to pull that one. Or the 237 times she’s tried to pull it before but ended up ‘falling off the wagon’. That wagon might also be significantly easier for her to pull than your ‘lose 20 lbs’ wagon. Hey, life isn’t fair. I’ve been trying to pull my ‘lose 20 lbs’ wagon up a hill for a while now, it just keeps rolling back down to the bottom!
The thing about wagon pulling is that it is a solo sport. There are no winners and losers, only wagon pullers. And we all have our own paths, wagons, and distances to go. So why bother comparing your wagon to anyone else’s? Unless you’re looking for motivation to pick yours back up, of course.
Pick up the damn wagon and PULL!
Ok, so I hate the ‘DO IT RIGHT NOW‘ mentality. I just do. But here’s the thing, when you’re ready, pick up the wagon handle and start pulling. Whatever is in that wagon, you decide whether or not to pull it. Look for things that might help you pull, surround yourself with people who don’t think your wagon isn’t worth pulling, and give yourself some grace when you need to let it go for a few minutes.
For me and my health wagon specifically, this looks like taking Juice Plus every day, having regular contact with my close friends who get me, carving out some time to take care of myself, and remembering that the cookie I ate 10 minutes ago won’t blow up my wagon.
I’m not ‘falling off the wagon’. I simply let go for a few minutes. After all, it’s all about balance, friends! Balance and pulling your wagon at whatever pace is comfortable!
