Yup. I did it. I picked a word of the year. No, this article will not help you pick yours. Go here for that. That’s the resource I used to get mine. So what IS this article about? It’s all about ME! Duh! But really, it’s my thought process behind my word, what it means to me, and why the heck this matters so much.
So what IS my word you ask? You probably already know, but in case you don’t read everything I write…. here it is:
You read that right: Consistency. I flirted with consistent and consistently, but consistency won out. I also modified a quote that I cannot take credit for by removing ‘persistence’ and putting in ‘consistency’ because something about the power of water gets to me.
So, by now, you get the general drift of my word selection. But how did I land here? By reading a book this past summer called Grit by Angela Duckworth and realizing that ‘intensity’ and ‘consistency’ are two very different things. Consistency without intensity will still produce some sort of results, and occasionally intensity alone will yield something, but usually not much. The key to BIG success is consistency PLUS intensity. But the intensity can wax and wane… the consistency cannot.
I am frickin’ GREAT at intensity. Just ask my family. (Kidding! kinda.) I tackle new endeavors like they’re a bag full of money. I run into things with gusto and bravado… only to sneak away when it gets hard or boring. So how do I change that? I work on turning my flamethrower intensity into a controlled burn and build my consistency muscle.
I’ll train for a half marathon, write a book, and make plans to tackle healthy eating in bite-sized chunks. All of these things take more than brute strength… they take consistency. And they’re all things I really WANT to do! I know consistency is my weakness across the board, and for the coming year, I am going to acknowledge that (as hard as that is) and actively work on it.
How far-reaching is my word of the year?
My word of the year includes my Juice Plus Business. I am going to get better at promoting this awesome product and business (In a non spammy way of course!) All while improving my customer care and accountability groups for shredders and One Simple Change-ers.
It’s a bit ironic, but the ONE THING I am consistent with every day (Aside from insulin and other life required medical
It’s crazy to me that without finding Juice Plus I NEVER would have this blog, some of my amazing friends, and the ability to be confident that my kids WON’T catch every bug. I wouldn’t be choosing a word of the year, I wouldn’t be paying at least a few of our bills, and I definitely wouldn’t be as healthy as I am now. It’s a slightly freaky feeling knowing I can count on my health and the health of my family. Freeing, but freaky nonetheless. I don’t plan for illness anymore.
So what’s the point of sharing my word of the year?
Mainly I just wanted to demonstrate what a word of the year might look like, how far reaching it can be, and what the backstory might look like. I think it’s also possible to pick multiple for different aspects of your life, but I’m lazy and forgetful (read as ‘inconsistent’… see?!) so I went with one that will cover every aspect of my life.
Stay tuned and check back in to see how well I stick with it!
