Talkspace. ‘Therapy for how we live today.’
I am a therapy fan. RAVING FAN y’all. I think everyone needs therapy at some point in their life. If you think you don’t need therapy, you need therapy for thinking you don’t need therapy. Just sayin’. I have seen in person therapists, I have used EHAP therapists through work, but for the past 3 years, I have strictly been a Talkspace girl.
What is Talkspace?
Talkspace is a mobile therapy service that connects you with a licensed provider through your computer, tablet, or smartphone. I use it predominantly through my phone. I record voice messages up to 5 minutes long and they get sent to my therapist through the secure server. She listens/ reads my messages and responds typically the same day. I have the super ultra unlimited plan, so I talk to my therapist at least once a day most days. It. Is. Glorious. So what are some reasons you need it? I’ll give you 6. 1. Everyone Needs Therapy
I don’t care how stable you think you are, chances are you’ve had some shit happen to you. If not, then you still need therapy so you can relate to the rest of us who HAVE had the shit. We ALL have these little cognitive distortions that affect how we think and challenging those can be truly eye-opening. Therapy is for everybody. And the more people who do it, the more mainstream it becomes, leading to more people doing it resulting in more people helped. It’s not hard to see we have a mental health crisis. At least in the USA. So let’s start working on it! One of the best ways to help is by taking care of your own mental health and leading by example. 2. It’s EASY
Leaving the house, finding a babysitter if you need one, sitting in a waiting room, remembering everything that happened so you can rehash it all during a 45ish minute session is, in and of itself, stressful. Talkspace is easy. Whip out your phone and type a message while you wait in line for coffee. Record a voice message while you’re sitting in your car before you walk into work. Listen to your therapist’s response while you run the shower. It fits seamlessly into your life. It’s safe and secure too. They take it seriously. 3. In the heat of the moment
This is a huge one for me. When I feel a mental storm a brewing, or I feel like I might snap, I record a message for my therapist. She can hear the emotion in my voice, listen to my stream of consciousness at that precise moment. It’s raw, unfiltered, data for her (and me). The biggest difference between going to an office and using Talkspace has been the ability to filter what I share. Because it’s therapy, I choose to filter as little as possible. Which is why having the ability to share while the iron is red hot is so important to me. Talkspace Review Betterhelp Online Therapy Awkward yet healthy Rebekah Svensson rebekahisawkward.com
4. It’s affordable
Therapy can be EXPENSIVE. And considering how often I communicate with my therapist, I’d have bankrupted us by now had I gone the ‘traditional’ route. I choose the unlimited plan, which is currently 49$/week. Since I use it WAY more than 2x a week, it’s less than my copay would be in a traditional setting. I am a lifer. However, Talkspace can be used for a short-term need, couples needs, as well as for teens. All in all, it’s going to save you money on therapy. It just will. 5. It’s streamlined
If you decide you need to talk to a professional, Talkspace will have you connected to someone within a matter of hours if not minutes. (If it’s a life-threatening crisis, I would encourage you to call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or 911.) There’s no insurance to battle, no googling directions, getting dressed, or finding a babysitter. You go onto the website and click ‘start chatting’ and you will have a real, live person to talk to that will help you find the right therapist. Depending on your pre-tax account situations you MIGHT even be able to use non-taxed money to pay for it. But as far as just getting started with therapy…it doesn’t get any more streamlined, or faster, than this. 6. It works
I have been with Talkspace, and my therapist, for over 3 years. During that time I have been diagnosed with Cecliac Disease moved across the country, returned to and left work, handled a rough diagnosis for my son, and fought through lots of personal issues. Would I still be here without Talkspace? Probably. But I’d have a horrible attitude, no friends, and be a victim of unrelenting victim mindset. I have learned more about myself these past 3 years than I ever thought possible. I am happier, stronger, more willing to try, and more flexible than I ever imagined I’d be. There’s still light years to go, and I’ll never really be finished, but I cannot stress enough how happy I am with the progress I’ve made. The new tattoo that I got not too long ago helps remind me of all this. It’s a constant uphill battle. Like the path out parents took to school and back every day (haha) but I’m actually ok with that now. The relationship I have with my therapist is something I consider very special. Considering how often we move, knowing that I have a consistent provider is huge for me. She has been there for me, pushed me when she knew I could handle it, coddled me when she knew I needed it, challenged me when I didn’t think I was strong enough and applauded me when I wouldn’t acknowledge my hard work. When I first started with Talkspace I told her ‘I don’t want to be blamed for everything’ meaning ‘I don’t want to be held responsible’. But this saint of a human being has stuck with me through it all, and I am so proud to say that I am now able to identify that victim mindset and tackle it head-on. I am honored to say I use Talkspace because of the people they employ. Talkspace Review Betterhelp Online Therapy Awkward yet healthy Rebekah Svensson rebekahisawkward.com
